Here is Where we Need Backer Help

Why is Active Atom Precision Machining coming to Kickstarter besides needing to raise money for the usual production tooling and materials?

• Active Atom needs to raise money for a new CNC machines.
• The machines like the products we make, are "Made in the USA".
• Raising the money is required to improve our production, make the Clip-Spring Pen affordable and make them in a reasonable time and getting them to our campaign backers.

To date, we have made 1 each of the 15 model versions of the Clip-Spring Pen but those 15 pens took us a lot of hours each to make.  The machines we made the prototype Clip-Spring Pens with are great and very accurate but they are only able to make small precision parts in small numbers.

The truth is, to make enough of these fine writing pens for our backers, we need to buy more powerful automated CNC machines, allowing us to do this and future projects quicker then we do now.

The Clip-Spring Pen is offered in 3 aerospace metals but not just any aerospace metals, the really tough to machine metals.

Allow us to explain:

We really want to show off our design, programming, technical and machining skills to our backers so we have pulled out all of the stops.

• Design and Machine Skill One
  Solve the continuing issue many pen designers and makers have fought with for as long as we can remember, a pen clip that attaches (with ease) to more stuff and will not bend out of shape.
  
  
• Design and Machine Skill Two
  If a pen is going to have a screw on cap such at the Clip-Spring Pen does, then make it so the person using the pen does not have to encounter the threads when writing with the pen.
  

Not All Aerospace Metals are Created Equally

Generally a metal aerospace pen is offered in aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel or titanium and so are some of ours, but here are some comparatively huge differences.

• All of the metals we machine at Active Atom are made with mil-spec certified materials and the pens are produced here in our shop in the USA.
  
  
• The Clip-Spring Pen is made of toughest to machine metal alloys.
  
  
• Average custom aluminum pens are made using 6061-T6.  Our Clip-Spring Pen is made using 7075-T6 which is tougher, brighter and non corrosive, including the aluminum pen clip.
  
  
• These Aluminum pens have hints of gold and pink if you look really closely.  The toughness comes from 5.8% zinc 2.3% magnesium and 1.4% copper, balance is aluminum.
  
  
  
• We are offering a bronze pen but not just any bronze, 932 bronze which is an aerospace bearing and bushing tough 83% copper, 6.9% tin, 1.0% nickel and 7.0% lead.  This metals makes for a slightly heavier pen with a bronze pen clip.  This will provide the campaign backers a toughest in class for a golden metal colored pen.
  
  
• We are not just making a titanium pen, what we are making is a toughest in class for titanium pen.  It is Grade 5 which is also known as 6al-4v, that means it is 90% pure titanium, 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium.  This makes the pen and the pen clip a toughest in class pen.

We are not making a copper, brass or stainless steel pen at this time.  One main model is designed in 15 versions, in 3 aerospace metals which is enough for a first product launch.

The American Machined Ballpoint Clip-Spring Pen has two great new features and we hope you will find these two features as enjoyable to use daily as we did in creating them and solving many difficult design and machining challenges along the way.

We also currently have 34 additional future projects we have completed drawings for and want to make and share with our backers over the years to come.

New Website

Please view our company’s brand new website named Active Atom Precision Machining Company.

We are an American Made products company.  The website is more then just a place to share what types of machines we utilize, types of materials we machine or the products we make and sale, it is a community of sharing our 25 years of knowledge in the micromachining and small precision parts manufacturing business.

These Active Atom 25 years of skills are now being applied to our new American Machined products for the consumers and machine shop industries all in limited editions.

For example, our first and current offering, the Clip-Spring Pen is being produced in no more then 999 serial numbered pens for each of the 15 versions of our first product design.

The website offerings:

• We have a section for materials we utilize in making machined parts.
• We have a section called Material Cheat Sheet to help fellow machinist with material cutting.
• We have a couple of libraries that are ever expanding as we are adding to them as often as possible and those two libraries are Metalworking Literature and Watchmaker Literature machines and tool catalogs images of machines and tools we use.

As best friends, Patrick Lara and Lance Conway produce everything we make or work on and is done at our machining company located in a small rural town in the California Desert.  A lot of the work while CNC precision machined by us, it is also finished and assembled by our own hands.

What Exactly does Active Atom do?

We have been micro-machinists and watchmakers for decades.  Because of this, we are also CNC programmers and precision machinists so we know a little about very high tolerance precision machining and finishing to the micro and micron levels.  These are just a few of the decades of learned skills we will be sharing via this website and our social media outlets over time.

We will start sharing on this new website, a very unique collection of fully operational vintage lathes, mills and tools we still use when making precision machined products.  We will likely share some rare watchmaker tools and a wrist watch movement or two as well.

We are going to catalog our inventory of rare vintage machines, micro-machines, precision tools and fixturing to mention some and we will share all that we can on our website as well.

It is our dream and we hope to fulfill our goal to leave a fully working micro-machine and inspection and test tool museum after we are gone someday so this website is the conduit for awareness of this growing working museum.

Offering our first consumer product, the Clip Spring Pen is one of 34 drawings that became a design and then prototypes.  And finally more precision machined products from over the years of things we want to machine and assemble for ourselves, this is how we are funding the museums growth with our modest income.

How we Produce our Products is Unique

We manufacture products utilizing CNC machines but we also make really small detailed micromachined parts for our products including the Clip-Spring Pen, utilizing our vintage micromachines and tools.

We are more then just machinists, watchmakers, programmers and electro-mechanical electronics designers and builders.  We are hobbyist geologists and because we live in the open and mostly untouched desert, we are able to explore and learn about the geographical features minerals and elements.  Many of these same elements make up the aerospace grade materials and go into the products we machine.

We are two best friends that really hope others will allow us to share our experiences with making, servicing, rebuilding and repairing many items from things around the house to things we utilize in the making of our machined products.

Our training and skills are really interesting because we know all that we know through mentoring, by research and trial and error, so that others might gain vast knowledge, you might even try doing some of the things we do for yourself, we warn you though this can become habit forming.

This is our Second Blog Post

The first blog post by Active Atom Precision Machining was a post about the 10 Precision Machining topics we will be sharing over time via our website, this blog, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkedin and other social media networking services.

Our first product, the Clip-Spring Pen is going to be documented via our YouTube Channel as a video series of us making the Clip-Spring Pens that backers can follow along while watching the actual pens they backed being made from start to finish.

When we posted Blog Post 1, that is really us Lance Conway and Patrick Lara in the photos, we just feel it is important that you know who is sharing with you, what we are like and so on.

This second blog post is to announce and provide awareness to the prelaunch for our new Clip-Spring Pen, a precision writing device made in America and made by two best friends.  We also want to introduce you to our new and ever expanding website, a community for covering precision micromachining and CNC machining as well as designing, CNC programming, finishing and coatings of the American Machined products we are producing.
